We worked alongside the homeowner to design structural stonework in a non traditional manner. We came up with a traditional and structural style using creek stone picked from a private dry wash less than two miles from the project. It was important to the homeowner to have local stone.
To achieve her desired aesthetic we did not use any hammers or chisels on the face of the stone. We even broke a few long standing stone mason rules (such as setting some stones vertically). The project included a few highly technical aspects such as the configuration of three different flues and an ash dump traveling four stories as well as stone elevator shaft.
Satisfying the needs of an elevator contractor while using a structural stone veneer with uncut river rock turned out to be a challenge. There were also 12 structural stone piers, three fireplaces, and a full stone chimney. Despite using such a rough stone lay, we were able to ascetically blend our rustic look with the marvelous finish carpentry work using some “clean line” techniques.
